I believe the role of a judge is to apply the law as it is written. Courts exist to interpret and apply the law while respecting the separate roles of the legislative and executive branches. Judicial restraint is essential to maintaining public confidence in the integrity, neutrality, and independence of the justice system.

The Circuit Court serves a broad and vital function in our community. It handles serious criminal cases, complex civil disputes, family matters affecting children and parents, and appeals requiring careful review of lower court proceedings. Regardless of the subject matter, every litigant deserves a fair hearing, a prepared judge, and a decision grounded in sound legal reasoning - not outcomes, politics, or personal agendas. Consistency in applying the law promotes predictability, fairness, and respect for the judicial process.

Public safety is an important consideration in the work of the Circuit Court. In criminal matters, judges must balance the constitutional rights of the accused with the protection of victims and the community, particularly in pretrial and sentencing decisions. Accountability matters, and the law must be applied consistently and responsibly to preserve fairness, public safety, and public trust.

In civil and family cases, the court must provide a fair and efficient forum for resolving disputes and applying established legal standards to matters that deeply affect businesses, property rights, and families. Careful preparation, thoughtful analysis, and well-reasoned decisions are essential in every division of the court. This is especially true in cases involving children. Family law matters require thorough consideration, equal application of the law to both parents, and timely decisions to promote stability and serve the best interests of the child.

The courtroom should be a place of professionalism, order, and respect. Lawyers should be prepared, litigants should be heard, and proceedings should be conducted efficiently and with dignity. Clear rulings and written decisions that explain the court’s reasoning promote transparency and ensure that justice is not only done, but understood.

My judicial philosophy is guided by restraint, fidelity to the Constitution, respect for precedent, and commitment to the rule of law. As Circuit Court Judge, I will approach every case with care, independence, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to fairness for all who come before the court.
